The Who

The Who played in Denver Tuesday night. I had decided to get a ticket a couple of weeks before, the price was a non-McCartneyesque $52 for the third level. The Kid had already informed me he had a ticket and the plan was to meet him there (as he goes to school on the other side of the hill-commonly reffered to as The Front Range. Where I live with all the weeds is called "the west slope". The Front Rangers think us west slopers are hicks and they are right we are, but hicks without traffic)

Anyway I digress. So I leave town about 130pm, as I see it is starting to snow. Denver, under normal conditions is a 3-hour drive, so I figured I was in good shape.
I get about 60 miles down the road and Vail Pass is closed. Stuck in Vail for about 3 hours in the blowing snow. they open up the Pass about 5pm. The show starts at 7pm. I think maybe it won't start on time and I'll just miss the opening act-The Pretenders.
The first twenty miles over Vail Pass was slow going and nerve wracking driving where you are pins and needles praying that your car maintains traction.

At this point I am thinking, why am I doing this? Shouldn't I be at home plucking nose hairs and sucking down Bud Lights while watching CSI: Seattle or whatever? I mean crap, I am now 49 years old-why take chances going over the hill to see a band of 63 year old men?

Because it's only rock n' roll, that's why. No that's not really why. I figured I had bought the ticket and paid for the hotel room and you only live twice Mr. Bond.

When it got safe to use the cell phone I called the Kid and he kept me posted on the show. When I got over the Pass and through the Tunnel, to Georgetown, the Kid calls and says the opening act was on, but it was not the Pretenders. So the Pretenders
would be the second act. At this point, I was about an hour away. The road was starting to show black pavement. I was out of the woods and the snowpacked road.

Anyway I got to Pepsi Center at 8pm, about 10 minutes before The Pretenders came on. I located the Kid. Our seats were not together, however since, the third level was sparsely populated we were able to sit together.

Chrissie and the fellas came out and they were in fine form, although I didn't know as many songs as I thought I would. The original drummer, Martin Chambers, is still in the band. When they played "Chain Gang" I tried to explain to the Kid what it was about.

They played close to an hour, then the Who came on.

First song was "I Can't Explain", and it was off to a good start. They had Macca-like special video effects which added a nice touch. They ran through most of their big hits. A nice jam on "My Generation". "Baba O'Riley" was the show stopper for me. If any of you are Who fans, check out the new CD-"Endless Wire". Very strong material and a suprising amount of acoustic guitar by Pete. In fact they did a few numbers with Pete on acoustic. The "Wire" material came off well I thought, "We Got a Hit" is a catchy tune and if it was the 70's or 80's, the song would be a hit. "Emminence Front" was a crowd pleaser.

The last song of the night was a new one called "Tea and Theatre" with just Roger and Pete on acoustic. Interesting visuals accompanied this one-images of two older people. Like Macca, the subject of "Tea" has figured promiently in a new song.

It was a good end to a great show.

I told the Kid that it is rare to see a great band at a time when they also have great new material.

If you get a chance take in The Who, you should be able to see them without taking out a second mortgage.

[sign in to see URL] Who were always one of my favorites. No Keith or John.

Re: The Who

I can't beleive I left that part out.
Zak Starkey on drums. Pino Palladino on bass, he replaced The Ox after his passing in 2002. Brother Simon Townshend was on guitar and vocals. Rabbit Bundrick was not there on keyboards as he had an emergency back home. So they had one of the roadie technicians play on about a third of the songs. He did a good job on "Behind Blue Eyes".

Back to Zak, coming home the next morning, I was listening to the radio and a DJ was talking about the concert and how he wasn't expecting Zak to be any good because he figured he got the gig because he was Ringo's kid. Then he said, "I was suprised he is really good". I thought geez how can you not know that if you are a [sign in to see URL] kid has played with the Who for years and Oasis.
