True, the solo careers are very compelling. But there is even precedence where our own Ringo agrees with me. He successfully sued Chips Moman to keep him from releasing a 1987 recorded album made in Memphis (I think for CRS Records, with notables such as Robert Zimmerman and the former Cat Stevens along for the ride) because Ringo contended that he made it in such a drunken state -- similar to almost everything he had made from Rotogravure until he sobered up.
Much of those drunken recordings made it on bootlegs, as we all know. But the truth of the matter is that at this nadir in Ringo's life, very few things he did in 87 made the light of day, with the most notable being his drum tracks on "When We Was Fab" and his guest appearance on the Prince's Rock Trust Fund Concert.
I'll get zapped for this next sentence, but there is little doubt that Ringo abandoned Moman's project because he did not want to release another Bad Boy or Ringo the IV -- two albums that probably would never get played at an "AA" meeting. And certainly two albums that refused to sell.
So instead of another money loser, Ringo was ordered by the courts in November 1989 to pay Moman $75K for the cost of studio time in exchange for the rights to block the release of an album that Ringo didn't believe would have been worth the vinyl Moman wanted to press it on.
