And Jagger/Richards drove Brian Jones to his death. It was great though when Brian told John Lennon how those two were trying to drive him out of the Stones. So John invited him to play saxophone on 'All You Need Is Love'. That showed those bastages!

Legendary songwriter has stories to tell

Mark Hudson likes to tell the story of the night he slept in Ringo Starr's four-poster bed, complete with owls and moons and stars on the sheets.

No, Ringo wasn't in it at the time, although Hudson admits the story would be a little juicier that way.

Not that he doesn't have plenty of more titillating tales, like the time he saved Ozzy Osbourne's life, or the time he helped Cher achieve her first, well, use your imagination.

Hudson, who's partied or worked with everybody from Led Zeppelin and the Beatles to Hanson and the Baha Men during a 40-year career as a musician, songwriter and producer, will share his stories of rock 'n' roll debauchery in a world-premiere one-man music and comedy show, “Livin' On the Edge,” Sunday at Puck in Doylestown.

You might not have heard of Hudson, he of the rainbow-colored facial hair and one-third of the 1974 TV variety show act The Hudson Brothers, but you've definitely heard his songs. He wrote the 1993 Grammy-winning Aerosmith hit “Livin' On the Edge” (and 12 other Aerosmith songs) and co-wrote (with Carole King) “The Reason” for Celine Dion, the opening track on her gazillion-selling 1997 album “Let's Talk About Love.”

“That song was originally rejected by Aerosmith,” Hudson, 56, said in a telephone interview this week. “I was so broken up. Then Celine Dion did it, and it paid for my divorce, my hair transplant and my (male enhancement).

“If you're gonna get rejected, wow, what a way to get rejected. Usually when that happens, the song ends up on your answering machine or the CD becomes an ashtray. This one ended up on an album that sold 28 million copies.”

Hudson originally penned the lyrics “In the middle of the night, I'm going down 'cause I adore you, I want to floor you,” with Aerosmith's Steven Tyler in mind. Co-writer King told him there was no way the prim Dion would sing those words.

“But we sent her the demo and she loved it,” Hudson said. “Everyone good wants to be bad. She showed up looking like a Q-tip with an accent and said her favorite part of the song was the "I want to floor you' line.

“It's not very often people interpret a song the way you wrote it, but she did. She had a bit too much echo for me, but she sang the song with tremendous passion.”

Was it difficult for Hudson, a guy who produced records for Aerosmith, Ozzy and Ringo, to work with adult-contemporary queen Dion?

“I've got this wall of platinum-selling CDs,” he said. “I've got Ozzy, and next to Ozzy is Hanson and next to Hanson is Aerosmith and next to Aerosmith is the Christian rock band Jars of Clay. People wonder, "who is this guy? Is he biopolar?' But a good song is a good song.”

Hudson's musical odyssey ranges from the wild — his bio claims he shared in John Lennon's famous lost weekend and that he was with Led Zeppelin when they tried to light Elton John on fire — to the tame — his sessions working with Hanson were interrupted for “nap time.”

Just don't expect his stories to provide tabloid fodder.

“If I ever wrote a book and really told the truth, it'd be a bestseller, but that's not what you do. These are people's lives,” Hudson said. “I want to be funny, informative, sensitive and romantic, but I'm not going to cross a line and do anything harmful. I usually go between Gandhi and Gotti; this show is basically the Gandhi part of me.”

Not that he won't slip a little good-natured venom into the act.

Hudson recalls co-writing a song with Timothy B. Schmit of the Eagles and recording a demo that he thought was on par with the band's best songs.

“Don Henley rejected it within eight seconds,” Hudson said. “So I changed the title to "Don Henley, You Bastard.' I still love that song. Rascal Flatts has it on hold; I'm hoping they record it someday.”

One of Hudson's proudest moments is writing “Livin' On the Edge,” a song whose lyrics resonate even more today than they did a decade and a half ago. He decided to name his show after the song because “the edge is where I've lived.”

He's thrilled — and a little scared — to be trying a new venture at this stage of his life.

“I'm supposed to be old and disgruntled. How often does a person my age get to try something new and exciting?” Hudson said. “People are either going to get me, or they're going to look at me like an oil painting.

“If it works, great. If not, I'll be working at the Doylestown Starbucks next Thursday.”

Mark Hudson performs his one-man show “Livin' On the Edge” Sunday at Puck, 85 Printers Alley in Doylestown. Show time 7:30 p.m. Tickets $19. 215-348-9000 or www.pucklive.com

Brian couldn't write songs. His influence wasn't as great once Jagger and Richards hit thier groove. John thought Paul was trying to steal The Beatles too. John was an acid head. Paul kept the group alive as long as he could. Brian was wasted, addicted to everything and a head case. My goodness. Why would I want him leading my band.
