Tom

Well, I was locked out for a while but finally found my way back here and what do I see but a whole section devoted to whatever trash I may be able to spew. I must say thanks, and I hope that I'll be able to love up to this honor. I'll try to start by relating this story of which I was reminded this morning while listening to a few Power to the People outtakes:

The year was 1975. I was a budding young hoodlum who spent most of his waking hours daydreaming about excellent record albums with titles such as Walls and Bridges, Goodnight Vienna, Venus and Mars, and Extra Texture. In fact, at the specific time in 1975 of which I am thinking, Extra Texture had just been released and I just had scraped together enough pocket change (literally- I paid for it entirely with nickels dimes and quarters) to go into town and buy it at Korvette's where it was on sale for $3.98. I was a big fan of the album. I had a fort on the 2nd floor of the barn where I had some ratty furniture and a worn out record player on which the speakers buzzed so loud all the time that you had to turn up the music REAL loud so you could hear it over that buzzing noise. That was my hangout and I spent all my time there listening to these great records and I was on my eighth day or so of proud ownership of Extra Texture and was busy trying to wear out the grooves of it on that crappy record player, which I did eventually succeed in doing but at a much later date, and on that day on my way through the barn heading towrds the stair to my fort what did I find but an old almost empty can of spray paint thrown off to the side on the floor.

Now, what could I possibly do with that old can of spray paint I asked myself. And instantly I knew. Oh, I knew. I immediately took that can of spray paint upstairs and spray painted the title to the Extra Texture lead off on the wall of the barn. "YOU" in big capital letters. I stood back and looked at it. Then all of a sudden immediate regret! UH-OH! My Dad's gonna see that and He's gonna kill me! Right away I took the can of spray paint and hid it under a ratty piece of furniture to do away with the evidence. I played some music on my record player that day, but I could barely hear it over the speaker buzz 'cuz I had it turned down way low becuase I didn't want to play anything loud that might draw attention to my fort and then the old man might come up there and see the spray paint, and man, I didn't want that to happen.

Well, a few weeks went by and I lived that whole time in fear that my Dad would come up into the fort and see the spray paint and kill me. The one week it happened. One night during the week old Pops said to me "Tom, we're gonna clean out your fort this Saturday". Oh !@#$! was all I could think. The rest of that week was one of the worst of my life. I lived it out in total trepidation, rueing the dreaded day that was coming when I would have to go into my fort with Dad and he would see the Beatle-inspired graffiti that I had wrought and then execute me on the spot. I hoped and prayed that the day would not come. But it did anyway. It came all the same. So, Saturday morning me and Dad tromped up there, my Dad acting genial and me quaking in fear, and when we got there my Dad saw it: "YOU" spray painted on the wall. He stared at it for a second, just a second, and then you know what he said? Nothing! That's right, nothing. He simply went to work on cleaning the place up. Well, I then immediately joined in on the cleaning, didn't say a word about the paint job, and smiled as my mood improved by about 100%. I couldn't believe it. I had spray painted the name of a Beatles song on the wall and gotten away with it! Man, everything was clear in my world!

So, we got the place clean and some days went by and one day I was hanging out in my fort and I remembered that almost empty can of spray paint that I had hidden under the ratty chair. It hadn't been found in the cleaning I'd done with dad soy mind got to wandering wondering what I might be able to do with it. Of Course! I thought: I'll spray paint the title of another Batles song here on the wall of my fort. So, I got the spray can out and spray painted "POWER TO THE PEOPLE" on the wall in big letters. I then stood back and admired my artwork and this time instead of regret my entire thought process was focused on one theme: Man, that is bitchen! No longer afraid of my Dad since he had said nothing about the "YOU", I assumed that this was fine. I really wanted to paint some more song titles on the wall, but unfortunately Power to the People is kind of a long phrase and it had taken every last drop of paint out of my nearly empty spray can. Oh well. At least I had gotten that one done.

So, life went on and I continued enjoying my daily ritual of sitting on my ratty furniture listening to Beatles records on my crappy record player and admiring the most excellent artwork that I had personally applied to the walls of my Beatles fort. Life was good for a while. This lasted a couple of weeks. Then one Saturday morning I remember I was sitting in the house watching TV wishing the Beatles cartoons where still on TV when this unbelievable screaming arose from outside in the barn. It was the old man and he was screaming "TOM! TOM! WHERE ARE YOU? GET UP HERE!" Thinking that some one or smoe thing was dying for sure the way he was screaming I left the house at a dead run to see what was amiss.

When I got to the barn he was still screaming and I could tell from where the sound was emanating that he was on the 2nd floor. I ran up the stairs to see what was the matter and there he was my Dad looking like a demon of anger pointing at the "POWER TO THE PEOPLE" graffiti. Man, from that point forward that one turned into one bad day. Hell, it turned into one bad week. I got whipped, spanked, beaten, the whole lot and what was worse Pops took my record player away for a week (see - it wasn't really my record player anway. It was his, he just gave it to me to use because he had bought himself a new one because he couldn't hear any music on that one becaue the speakers buzzed so loud, so he could do stuff like take it from me).

So, there I was with a sore rear and no Beatles records for a whole week. All I could think was man, this sucks. And I asked myself every day: Did I learn anything from this? And I realized, yes I did. The moral of this whole story: If you paint the name of a George song on the wall never fear, because nobody's going to care. But if you paint the name of a John song on the wall you better watch out, 'cuz man, folks is gonna be pissed!
