In elementary school, the teacher had our class sent out requests for first day of issue stamps as each new stamp came out. While traveling, continued to collect first day's and stamp blocks from different places when mailing postcards....
Now, the new first day covers are some sort of subscription service through the post office.
It's not the same, somehow.
Stamp collecting was further encouraged by the Sunday School teacher (1950's-1960's) who gave us a handful of stamps from her collection for each book of the bible we could name in order....
